Bridging Pathway at Rotherham Opportunities College
Our Bridging pathway focuses on the development of independent living skills by giving students the opportunity to apply classroom learning in a real world setting.
Building independence
Every student receives a bespoke programme of activity, bringing together the practical skills needed to promote and encourage independence. Students are taught practical skills at our St Ann’s House facility, as well as receiving classroom-based independent living sessions. Students are also provided with travel training.
Volunteering
The practical skills taught on our Bridging pathway are put into practice with a varied range of volunteering opportunities within the local community. Volunteering not only helps our students to benefit from practical learning outside the classroom, but also helps prepare them for work experience.
Therapies
Therapeutic exercise is embedded throughout our curriculum. Students are supported through one-to-one and small group sessions.
Students within this pathway are supported to work towards a more independent lifestyle after college, developing skills that they will take with them into their adult lives.
Learning is very much a combination of classroom and community led activities where students develop the skills they need to navigate daily living and social confidence.
Intent
A pathway that focuses on positive wellbeing and improving confidence. Students receive support to develop strategies to improve speaking and listening skills, improve their understanding of time and number, reading and writing.
Students will develop their independence through accessing St Ann’s House our independent living site as well as an expectation that they will participate in group community projects and volunteering activities.
Implementation
Tutors and learning support will promote a more active approach to learning providing lots of opportunities to access the community and develop social responsibility through volunteering and citizenship projects. Wrap around group therapy is embedded into sessions to support the learning process and targeted support when students need that little bit more.
Impact
Students will develop their confidence through the development of personal wellbeing and independence. Students will develop their knowledge of functional communication and strategies to allow them to flourish in the community through citizenship projects. There is the potential for students to go onto further meaningful volunteering, social activities and supported living.
